A Garden You Can Actually Live In

Southwinds Farm & Gardens — Irvine, California

I almost didn’t go.

A nursery in an industrial part of Irvine didn’t exactly sound like the kind of place that would stop me in my tracks. But a friend mentioned it, I had an afternoon free, and I figured — why not?

What I found was nothing like what I expected. And I’ve been thinking about it ever since.

Not a Nursery. Not a Garden. Something Else Entirely.

Southwinds Farm & Gardens describes itself as a landscape and interior design idea center and design campus — and once you walk through the entrance, that description makes complete sense.

Spanning over 4 acres, Southwinds is a one-of-a-kind design campus featuring carefully curated outdoor living concepts. You can sit in them, walk around them, touch and feel them. It’s not a showroom in the traditional sense — there are no glass cases or velvet ropes. Everything is out in the open, fully realized, fully planted, fully alive.

The best way I can describe it: imagine walking through dozens of fully designed outdoor living spaces — each one complete, each one different — and being able to step inside all of them. That’s Southwinds.

At every turn, there’s more to see — more plants, more trees, more flowers, more design ideas. It genuinely feels like stepping into another world.

What You’ll Find Here

🌿 Living Design Vignettes

The campus is organized into a series of curated outdoor “rooms” — each showcasing a different style, material palette, and plant combination. You’ll move from a Mediterranean courtyard to a modern minimalist garden to a lush tropical space, all within the same four-acre property.

Trees, planting materials, pottery, furniture, decor, and accessories are all displayed together in coordinated installations— so you can see exactly how different elements work together in a real space, rather than imagining it from a catalog.

🏛️ Hardscape & Architecture

Stonework, water features, fountains, garden walls, pergolas, trellises, and architectural elements are woven throughout the campus. These aren’t decorative props — they’re fully functional installations built to the same standard you’d expect in a finished landscape project.

🪴 The Nursery

Any plant on the property is available for purchase — even the trees. And they deliver. The plant selection ranges from ornamental grasses and flowering perennials to mature specimen trees and rare tropicals. Staff are knowledgeable and genuinely helpful.

☀️ Casa del Sol

One of the most unexpected features of the campus is Casa del Sol — UC Irvine’s award-winning entry into the 2015 Solar Decathlon. This actual house is now part of the campus and is used to display indoor plants and interior design ideas — giving you a sense of how plants and design work together inside a home as well as outside.

🌱 Founders Farm

Tucked within the campus is Founders Farm, a zero-waste, solar-powered one-acre regenerative urban microfarm employing hydro-organic and 100% organic soil-based growing systems. Run in partnership with the Second Harvest Food Bank of Orange County, it’s a working example of how sustainable urban agriculture can thrive in the middle of a city like Irvine.

Who Is This Place For?

The honest answer: almost anyone.

For homeowners and garden dreamers, it’s the best possible way to figure out what you actually want in your outdoor space. You can’t get this kind of spatial understanding from Pinterest boards or design magazines. Walking through a fully realized garden and sitting in a real outdoor chair under a real pergola surrounded by real plants — that’s a different experience entirely.

For design professionals, Southwinds functions as a working resource campus. Clients can bring their designers, architects, or contractors to walk through the installations together, helping them to visualize and communicate their project goals. On-site specialists are available for private consultations and project review meetings.

For plant lovers and garden enthusiasts, it’s simply a beautiful place to spend a few hours. There are plenty of seating areas throughout the grounds, and relaxing music plays as you stroll — making it a genuinely peaceful escape from the surrounding city.

And for anyone who just loves discovering beautiful, unexpected places — this is very much one of those places.

A Few Things Worth Knowing Before You Go

It’s free to visit. Admission is free, making it an easy and affordable way to spend an afternoon. You’re welcome to walk the entire campus without any obligation to purchase.

The plants are on the higher end. Several visitors note that the pricing reflects the quality and curation — this isn’t a budget nursery. But the walking experience itself costs nothing.

Go on a weekday if you can. The campus is quieter, and you’ll have more time with the on-site team if you have questions.

Bring a camera. Every corner of this place is photogenic. The combination of mature plants, sculptural pottery, running water, and thoughtful design makes it one of the most visually rich spaces in Orange County.
